1: The Great NationStates Blackout
Authored by America the Greater, Fact

On April 15, in the middle of the campaign season, not to mention a crucial Voting Session, NationStates started showing a strange error regarding their database. Not long afterward, the site was no longer accessible to any members. While the site was down, the Discord remained active, and citizens seemed fairly confident that the outage would only last for a few days - on April 18, New-Union stated that “Ns should be back on a [day] or two,” and America the Greater claimed that “Seems the admins think it’ll be up tomorrow or the day after.” As the days dragged on, and NationStates remained offline, citizens began to lose enthusiasm, with New United Common-lands warning citizens to “get ready for the long haul.” However, the dedicated NationStates administrators worked diligently over the following days, and on April 25, the site came back online.

With NationStates operating once again, the Election Commission realized that the loss of ten days was critical to the election. Returning candidates would only have a period of five days to campaign before the election began, which the EC deemed insufficient, announcing their recommendation that the candidates vote to delay the election by fourteen days - according to the EC, this delay “[would] allow for current proposed bills to be voted on prior to the election, proper campaigning time for those solely based on NS rather than discord and time for the EC to host interviews and debates between candidates.”

The candidates were contacted by the Election Commission, and a majority have voted in favor of delaying the election by the maximum allowed time of fourteen days. As a result, the election will officially commence on May 15, roughly one month after the NationStates outage began.

2: Candidate Platform Overviews
Authored by America the Greater, Fact

PM Platforms

  • Ardeyn
Ardeyn has been a citizen of TRTHNBB for years, and it appears that his campaign is largely focused on that long-term experience - though Ardeyn is currently a Justice in the Regional Court, a large part of his campaign announcement focuses on his experience as Minister of Domestic Affairs, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Speaker of the House (an old position, equivalent to Speaker of Parliament). Ardeyn hopes to utilize that depth of experience in order to strengthen our region’s foreign and domestic affairs, as well as continuing our frequent, successful events.
Ardeyn has received endorsements from New United Common-lands, Socialistic Britain, Gine Caruttiva, and Lemona.

  • Mjau
Mjau is a newer citizen in TRTHNBB, having joined less than a year ago, but he has quickly become an active member of the region’s government. His platform focuses largely on reforming the region, rather than maintaining the status quo. Mjau claims that TRTHNBB has a problem with elitism and is unwelcoming to newer nations. Mjau’s candidacy revolves around changing that by strengthening the legislature, decreasing barriers for entry into the government, and providing ways for all residents to contact the government and make their concerns heard.
Mjau has received endorsements from America the Greater, The Kaverian, Western Arba Fir, Claibornia, and Flomonga.

  • Pyhdon
Pyhdon is another relatively new citizen who is frequently active in the region’s roleplay. Pyhdon feels that the region’s government and roleplay are extremely elitist, and largely controlled by the same group of nations who enforce the rules unfairly. Pyhdon hopes to overturn this imbalance by prioritizing newer nations and making their voice heard, as well as removing corruption from the regional roleplay.

  • The Washington Federation
The Washington Federation, our incumbent Prime Minister, is once again running on a status-quo platform. The Washington Federation’s campaign largely focuses on a hands-off approach, claiming that the Prime Minister’s most important task is to stand back and allow the region to reform gradually through Parliament, rather than direct executive action. TWF also feels that a second term is merited in order to allow current deputy ministers to gain more experience before moving on to positions with more power and responsibility. Further, TWF pledges to expand the region’s cultural events.

DPM Details

  • Chronic and Violent IBS
Chronic and Violent IBS is a very new citizen of TRTHNBB. Their campaign promises are somewhat brief: they pledge to maintain political neutrality in their policies and encourage scientific advancement. It is unclear how these policies will be applied to our regional government.
Chronic and Violent IBS has received an endorsement from Yodle, with this stated reason: “Yodle supports all candidates to run, including ones which have a comical take.”

  • Gine Caruttiva
Gine Caruttiva is a new citizen who has been very active in Parliament. The main focus of GC’s platform is the strengthening of our region’s Bankless Liberation Forces, or BLF, which takes part in defense operations. Further, GC pledges to work with the Minister of Culture to ensure that TRTHNBB becomes a cultural hub for NationStates through improving roleplay and expanding our regional events.
Gine Caruttiva has received endorsements from New United Common-lands, Ardeyn, Claibornia, and Lemona.

  • Putt
Puttt is another new citizen who frequently engages in the regional roleplay. Puttt’s pledges are brief, but ambitious: Puttt hopes to abolish the veto, draft a new Constitution, and make our regional roleplay less elitist. No details have been given about the desired contents of this new Constitution, however, so it is unclear how Puttt’s term would impact the region.

  • Western Arba Fir
Western Arba Fir, once again a new citizen, has quickly gained the position of Diplomacy Officer and has developed legislation for Parliament. Western Arba Fir pledges to make the region more welcoming to newer nations by involving them in discussions about the regional government and taking their complaints. Western Arba Fir also supports granting more power to the legislative branch, along with decreasing the residency requirement for citizenship.
Western Arba Fir has received endorsements from America the Greater, Mjau, The Washington Federation, Flomonga, and The Kaverian.

Speaker Stances

  • The Kaverian
The Kaverian is a newer citizen who has become very active in Parliament and currently serves as the chairperson of the Rules Committee. The Kaverian pledges to remain neutral and facilitate debate in Parliament, relying on his extensive experience in the legislature. Further, The Kaverian hopes to expand the power of Parliament, bring greater clarity to the Constitution, defend Parliament against elitism, and generally increase Parliamentary activity.
The Kaverian has received endorsements from America the Greater, New United Common-lands, Lemona, Flomonga, Claibornia, and every current candidate for both Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, with the exception of Chronic and Violent IBS.

  • The Orangutan Nation
The Orangutan Nation is a very new citizen who participates primarily in the region’s roleplay. The Orangutan Nation has not released a platform or indicated their positions on regional issues.

3: Candidate Interviews
Conducted and collated by Syrasia, Opinion
Foreword by America the Greater

In the beginning of our election season, Syrasia, a new member of the region, expressed interest in conducting a series of interviews. After the Election Commission saw Syrasia’s previous work, we elected to accept their offer and officially endorse their interviews following a review by the Commission. We in the EC are very pleased with the exceptional work produced by Syrasia, and we’re excited to bring you the results!

For a preface, I’d like to explain the process: Syrasia provided a set of five general questions to each candidate, followed by a personalized set of questions. Chronic and Violent IBS, a DPM candidate, did not receive personalized questions due to confusion in the EC over their candidacy, and Puttt did not respond to requests for an interview. However, each of the candidates who responded provided excellent, in-depth answers, and I’m happy to provide them to you now.

Prime Minister Responses

Standard Questions

  1. What have you learned while being in TRTHNBB that you can take to the office of Prime Minister?
It is quite difficult to name just one thing, but I believe that would be communication. Whether that be writing official statements or simply speaking to people on our RMB or discord, being in this community has allowed me to learn a lot in that regard, and communicating is an absolutely essential thing for the role of a rallying figure such as Prime Minister.

  2. What would you say are your guiding principles?
Efficiency and transparency are what I would say are my major principles. I seek to ensure that my cabinet runs smooth as butter, getting things done quickly and neatly and also guarantee that during my term there will be total transparency and ensure that residents are always acutely aware of current government processes.

  3. There have been many votes in the region. Will you respect the will of the people in NBB?
Of course! Should I be elected, I would be a servant of the people and their will and shall ensure every decision made does not go against said will.

  4. What should the end of your tenure as Prime Minister look like?
By the end of my term I hope to have created new events for our region to look forward to in the future, assisted new members through their journey in government, seen us establish new embassies, and much much more. Overall, by my tenure's end, I would have ensured we stay on our course to activity and prosperity and helped boost our progress in that front as much as humanely possible, and I can guarantee it to be a tenure that all will remember.

  5. What do you want to be remembered for?
I wish to be remembered as a PM who achieved a great many things. One that further enhanced our foreign outreach, assisted in uplifting our liberation force, heightened our governments' transparency, as a sufficient reformer, I could go on forever on all I would be remembered for, but unfortunately, I have limited time.

Personal Questions

  1. As of the time of writing this question list, you are the only PM candidate who has made Foreign Affairs one of their main priorities, and you have pledged to committing our region externally to "potential FA treaters ... and participation in the interregional organisations [we are in]". Could we expect NBB to join further interregional communities, or will regional sovereignty also be a priority of a potential Ardeyn premiership?
Our membership in organisations such as JEFF and the InterLeft has provided our region with many opportunities as well as helped increase our outreach. Should the opportunity to be a part of another interregional alliance present itself during my tenure, I would be quite enthusiastic at the prospect.

That being said, however, I would only consider our membership in such alliances if our sovereignty would be respected and not toyed with, such was the case with our time in the NSLeft.

  2. Your defence promises centre a lot around the drive of a DPM candidate, Gine Caruttiva, even if they win that office. Can you assure readers of this interview that your cabinet does not suffer from revolving door syndrome (i.e., the same few faces coming in and out of government)?
I can guarantee that new faces will be seen in the government, and it won't just be the same few throughout the entirety of my term. I know this has been an issue especially recently, even as governmentally inactive veterans retain their positions. But, as Prime Minister, it would be my duty to ensure that we have the most efficient government possible, and Gine in my opinion is the best candidate for both Minister of Defense and Deputy PM. But as I said, I ensure that far newer members of government will be instated.

  3. In that same vein, your Cabinet centres heavily around already well-established members, and you are a candidate who has said little on how you plan to help new and prospective members of NBB. What do you have to say in regards to that?
Though the core of the cabinet will be filled by highly experienced and established individuals, I will heavily encourage them all to select deputies and minor officers who are newer to the region and show a great amount of promise. This would ensure that those greatly interested in holding office can earn themselves credit and experience by working under a ministry.

  4. You have pledged to reintroduce an Endotart program if you are elected, but the percentage of endorsements to the delegate versus population rests at around 23%, which can be considered a relatively safe value to be at. Is this pledge not promising a cake that's already been baked and served?
The Endotarting Initiative serves a few purposes, firstly to recognise the importance of WA Nations keeping up to date with their endorsements and rewarding people for good work in what can be a quite tedious regional task. Secondly, to help ensure our influence in the World Assembly is maximised as much as possible and ensure we stay at a very high regional power influence rating.

As things stand we currently sit at a healthy Delegate endorsement total with around 75%-ish percent endorsing Yodle. However, this is via the continued work of Yodle prompting people to endorse nations - this programme should help to ease that burden and ensure our endorsements on Yodle do not dip.

Standard Questions

  1. What have you learned while being in TRTHNBB that you can take to the office of Prime Minister?
After working to draft TRTHNBB's current constitution then being elected Deputy Prime Minister, I have full knowledge of how TRTHNBB functions and every one of its ins and outs. My term as DPM has given me direct practice for the Prime Minister position, and I've already operated directly as a PM in many events that have recently unfolded in TRTHNBB. My relatively short residency allows me to sympathise with new nations in TRTHNBB, I know what it's like to join our region for the first time, and I know the struggles that are difficult to overcome. So, I am certified to help solve these issues new nations face.

  2. What would you say are your guiding principles?
In NationStates it is most important to me to make the region more accepting to new nations. Why? Because spreading love and kindness is my most important guiding principle in life. In NationStates, this translates to creating the most welcoming and kind environment for everyone, which means creating an emphasis on new nations.

  3. There have been many votes in the region. Will you respect the will of the people in NBB?
Of course, democracy is incredibly important to a quintessential region, and it's a given for me. I couldn't imagine a TRTHNBB without democracy, in fact I have plans to expand the will of the people. Thanks to Flomonga's idea, I will create an anonymous platform for residents to complain about issues in our region, and give the government ideas on how to solve them. This will greatly expand the power of the resident, allowing for a better and more democratic TRTHNBB.

  4. What should the end of your tenure as Prime Minister look like?
At the end of my term, TRTHNBB will be a region more accepting to new nations, more democratic, more safe, and more inclusive than ever before.

  5. What do you want to be remembered for?
It's foolish to remember a leader, instead my push for a more accepting region should be remembered, so that future leaders also make the region more inviting to new nations.

Personal Questions

  1. You have mentioned dismantling elitism in roleplay (herein, RP), but have provided no detail on how it will be done. Can you shed some light on this now?
It's as simple as applying roleplay rules equally to every member. It's pretty clear that certain nations, especially ones that have been in the region for a long time, can get away with certain actions in roleplay that newer nations could never do, without being punished severely by the roleplay administrative team. Also, the abolishment of a connection between NationStates statistics and roleplay power needs to be administered, as newer nations have less powerful NationStates stats. Then, through cooperation and development, a less elitist roleplay can be formed.

  2. Ironically, you asked the rhetorical question of "How?" to expand the power of Parliament, yet again have not given much detail on what powers you will actually give to the legislature, other than stopping members from being removed. What exact powers will be shifted from the executive to the legislative branch and why?
I've said so many times that a stronger Parliament means making it more accepting to newer nations. This means lowering the citizenship requirements and decreasing the power of the executive branch through the use of laws and amendments. This could mean removing or decreasing the power of the veto, and making the vote of no confidence easier to pass through parliament.

  3. Linking back to the first question, you have said that Cabinet discussions should be polled to allow new members to feel connected to the government of the day. Wouldn't a much less time consuming method of this be to elevate newer members to Cabinet positions or minor offices rather than having the same dozen of people in government?
I want to do both of these things as I have said multiple times in my campaign dispatch and in other questions. I have campaigned for minor officers since the beginning, and this is one of the major ways I plan to make the region more accepting of new nations.

  4. Your private complaint system, whilst definitely commendable, has been noted by yourself as "allowing newer residents with little influence otherwise to have real say in the government". Can a resident not just publicly campaign for an issue they are passionate about? What makes this system different?
No new nation has ever done this. Why? Because they don't feel like they can or that they don't have enough influence. So, creating a specific and anonymous platform for this to take place opens it to everyone and will be in place in order to encourage newer nations to voice their thoughts.

Standard Questions

  1. What have you learned while being in TRTHNBB that you can take to the office of Prime Minister?
I have learnt that some people are very biassed to themselves, so I can take that into mind when I choose my parliament.

  2. What would you say are your guiding principles?
My guiding principle is to eradicate those who are elitist and put younger nations in.

  3. There have been many votes in the region. Will you respect the will of the people in NBB?
Yes, I will, or I would resign.

  4. What should the end of your tenure as Prime Minister look like?
A region with equality and everyone being more chill in NBB overall.

  5. What do you want to be remembered for?
Helping players get more power in their youth.

Personal Questions

  1. You are the PM candidate with perhaps the most vague and generalised goals in the campaign. Can you provide detail on how you'd make roleplay fair? Or what methods would you use to give the community an equal voice?
On rp, I would overhaul rp by having a new MoC [for example, you], and rp more governed by the people rather than the admins and MoC.
On equality, I will make sure I choose some of the younger players and put them in power so that they gain influence, as older players like ATG, NUCL, tWF and SB have way too much influence compared to many of us.

Comment from the editor - when writing "for example, you," Pyhdon was referring to Syrasia, the conductor of this interview.

  2. Your third goal claims you will be the "one active PM". Are you suggesting that the incumbent Prime Minister and their predecessors have not been active enough?
Yes… NUCL only posts once a day and tWF, a bit more but only like 3 times. I have more time so I will be checking in more and will be active unless I fall ill, which I will put PM status to my DPM.

  3. Very early on in the campaign, you were cited for both stealing BBCode from another resident and also for using AI to write much of what you had put in your initial manifesto. Can you assure readers that you have moved past these mistakes, and that these answers you have provided are your own writing?
Yes. Of course. I reassure you that it was a mistake and will never happen again.

Standard Questions

  1. What have you learned while being in TRTHNBB that you can take to the office of Prime Minister?
I learned under the administration of New United Common-Lands in his final term as prime minister, having considered taking on the job to help lead a transitional period between NUCL's time at the helm to whatever comes next.

  2. What would you say are your guiding principles?
My guiding principles are to take the status quo set by NUCL and build upon it.

  3. There have been many votes in the region. Will you respect the will of the people in NBB?
    Most certainly.

  4. What should the end of your tenure as Prime Minister look like?
While being PM for a substantial amount of time is something to set a legacy, I mostly want to be remembered for my work shaping the region's cultural affairs in what would become the heyday of NUCL's administration. (I was the MoC before I was ever in a position of executive power)

  5. What do you want to be remembered for?
I feel that my success comes in providing a somewhat smooth transition of power following the aftermath of NUCL's administration.

Personal Questions

  1. As the incumbent Prime Minister, a fair first question to ask I feel is: what has been the most defining success of your tenure?
I feel that my success comes in providing a somewhat smooth transition of power following the aftermath of NUCL's administration.

  2. You mention in your campaign you wish to have another term to "help [newer nations] hone their skills as deputies". What would you say to the objection that this is just a ploy to keep the same establishment residents in Cabinet posts, particularly when not all new nations are necessarily new to NS?
With relatively young nations (compared to a good amount of the establishment) now campaigning for government positions, this is the course of action I've decided on. In terms of this objection, I am not any different in terms of keeping establishment nations in their same posts, as nations such as NUCL are considered by all candidates to continue his term as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

  3. You have claimed that you wish to maintain the status quo, yet your deputy Mjau (of whom you sing nothing but praise) has now proceeded to run against you and argued for the upheaval of the status quo. Does this not show you are out of touch with the wishes of even your own incumbent Cabinet, let alone the wider region?
The incumbent cabinet (the only real exception being the aforementioned Mjau) tends to be aligned towards the idea of maintaining the status quo, though I am not certain in regards to the rest of the region. While Mjau's ambitious campaign has not gone unnoticed, I still wish him the best in his efforts as my (soon former) deputy.

  4. You have also pledged to be a candidate of steady reform rather than rushing into radical change under the "firm hands of the Cabinet". What do you say to the inference that this can come across as an elitist way of thinking about regional politics?
I say the "firm hands of the cabinet" as moreso asserting the power of the executive branch, though I can see where concern could lie. However, I'll say this, reform shall be implemented by process, not by force.

Deputy Prime Minister Responses

Standard Questions

  1. What have you learned while being in TRTHNBB that you can take to the office of the DPM?
I firmly believe that political moderation in matters of policy; polarisation leads to conflict. (Not the good kind.)

  2. What would you say are your guiding principles?
My guiding principles are what I think is best for the region. Whenever I make a decision I think about what is best for the region. Even though I may be wrong sometimes I think that is the best way to make a decision.

  3. There have been many votes in the region. Will you respect the will of the people in NBB?
As tragic as it would be, if CAVIBS were not elected, if that is the will of the people, so be it.

  4. What should the end of your tenure as DPM look like?
I would hope to end with a peaceful transition of power over a stable region.

  5. What do you want to be remembered for?
I would hope to be remembered (not only for my name), but also for being understanding and empathetic in matters of diplomacy, while helping to maintain a politically balanced and (relatively) peaceful region.

Due to confusion over Chronic and Violent IBS's status as an active candidate, Chronic and Violent IBS did not receive a set of personal questions.

Standard Questions

  1. What have you learned while being in TRTHNBB that you can take to the office of the DPM?
During my time in TRTHNBB, I've learned the importance of active participation, collaboration, and inclusivity in governance. As Deputy Prime Minister, I would work to continue promoting these principles by ensuring that all voices are heard and considered during the decision-making process, establishing a more direct democratic system.

  2. What would you say are your guiding principles?
Transparency, accountability and integrity have always been my key principles. I believe in promoting an open and honest dialogue, holding myself and others accountable for our actions, thus upholding our ethical and regional standards, the code of conduct, and the laws and regulations.

  3. There have been many votes in the region. Will you respect the will of the people in NBB?
Absolutely. Respecting and understanding the will of the people is the foundation in every democratic society. As Deputy Prime Minister, I am ready to fiercely uphold the decisions and choices made through the democratic processes by using referendums, motions, and other tools we are provided with, ensuring that they are implemented cooperatively and effectively for the benefit of our people. I am planning on actively expanding these tools through bills and other means.

  4. What should the end of your tenure as DPM look like?
By the time I leave office as deputy prime minister, I want to leave behind a legacy of positive change and progress. I aim to have contributed to the growth and development of our region, to have strengthened institutions within our regions as well as having a sense of unity among residents.

  5. What do you want to be remembered for?
I want to be remembered for my dedication serving the region and its residents with integrity, fairness, and compassion. As I stated before, I aspire to leave a lasting impact by making important contributions to the betterment of TRTHNBB and the well-being of its community, through strengthening the BLF, encouraging community events like chess tournaments, and bettering the overall culture of the region.

Personal Questions

  1. As of the time of writing this question list, you are one of few (at least, DPM) candidates I have seen make the BLF a major part of your platform. In what ways would you reorganise the BLF in order to make it more effective?
My vision is that BLF can become an organisation that plays a leading role in advocating for and protecting regional interests. This will be achieved by improving coordination within it: better communication, as well as reaching out beyond those who already know about us or care about our cause(s). This includes opening to a bigger range of liberators, widening the decision-making processes by including collaboration among members, and actively engaging with other regions to strengthen alliances and partnerships. (Through discords, embassies, regional message boards, but especially dispatches)

  2. You mention strengthening bonds amongst communities. Would this involve other regions? If so, which regions would they be?
Yes, building stronger bonds among communities would require working together with other regions. I imagine forming partnerships with regions that have similar democratic and/or socialist values. We would collaborate with our current friends, but also find new, interesting regions, with the obvious aim of fostering positive relationships and achieving shared goals.

  3. Unlike other candidates, your platform only really focuses on two key points - culture and defence. Can you provide any more substance outside of these areas, or are you a two-issue candidate?
While culture and defence are indeed key priorities in my platform, they are not the sole focus of my candidacy. But not only these two things are a part of my campaign, since there are many other concerns or issues which affect people within this region, hence my commitment towards addressing a broader range of problems facing TRTHNBB, by improving governance, community engagement, and regional development. My platform is built on the principles of inclusivity and collective progress, and I am dedicated to create a diverse range of initiatives to benefit the region and its people.

Standard Questions

  1. What have you learned while being in TRTHNBB that you can take to the office of the DPM?
I learned some of the problems that exist in the region, I was also president in gravy, where there were many problems of lgtbiphobia, problems in rp and so on.

  2. What would you say are your guiding principles?
My principles are to make ourselves a little independent from discord, since not everyone has discord, therefore, it is not a requirement for citizenship.

  3. There have been many votes in the region. Will you respect the will of the people in NBB?
    I will respect NBB

  4. What should the end of your tenure as DPM look like?
Puttt did not respond to this question.

  5. What do you want to be remembered for?
Puttt did not respond to this question.

Personal Questions

  1. Your platform/manifesto lacks detail, and as a result most questions will be on expanding on your pledges. Firstly, how would you go about "fomenting parliament". What sort of methods will you use to instigate this activity?
I will promote parliament by giving it some more rights, since I believe they have the duty to vote in all sessions

  2. Why would you go through all the effort of making an entirely new constitution for NBB, when you can easily amend the constitution instead? What advantages does that have for the community?
Oh, yes, i can modify it

  3. In what ways is RP "elitist". How would you go about dismantling this alleged hierarchy?
    Making sanctions

  4. Do you not think that a pledge to "be active" is redundant, as by taking on the responsibility of being DPM it is an expectation for you to be active anyway?
Yes, Im going to be in NBB all days, other thing is rhe hour, im european.

  5. Why would you seek to abolish the veto?
    Oh, is a lot elitist.

Standard Questions

  1. What have you learned while being in TRTHNBB that you can take to the office of the DPM?
For the past few months I've been a Diplomacy Officer working in the Foreign Affairs department, I've been an active Member of Parliament, I'm a comrade-rep in Interleft, and an active member of JEFF.

I will always respect the will of the people of our region if they don’t want me in office so be it, but I will always respect people’s decision even if I don't agree with it.

  4. What should the end of your tenure as DPM look like?
I don’t know what I see the end of my tenure as DPM will be. It matters what happens during those 4 months and I can’t control what happens during that time. It really matters what happens.

  5. What do you want to be remembered for?
I don’t care what I’m remembered for as long as the people of TRTHNBB are happy I’m happy.

Personal Questions

  1. You mention that you wish to make the region more welcoming to newcomers by "making sure all of their questions are answered". In what ways does NBB currently not answer the questions of newcomers, or is otherwise an ambiguous region? Can you pin down any part of the region which is actively confusing to support your pledge?
Our region needs to welcome newer nations by making it easier for them to thrive. We do that by making it easier to become a citizen and join regional Parliament and get them into rp. We need to get more minor officers, there are many active nations that would be great MOs.

  2. What specific powers would you give Parliament in order to "give [it] more power than the Executive Branch"?
I plan to do this by eliminating the veto and making it easier for people to join Parliament. Parliament represents the people best.

  3. What is the justification behind wanting to loosen the citizenship requirements as you have mentioned?
We need to loosen the citizenship requirements because 30 days is too harsh. We want people to join Parliament ASAP and vote on legislation.

  4. Do you not think that your statement that you "will never give up" is again an expectation rather than a pledge? Other candidates have also promised activity; do you not think it is a minimum requirement rather than a unique selling point?
It is a pledge because I am promising it. Other candidates are promising activity and they are pledging too. It is not a minimum requirement you don’t need to promise activity.

Speaker of Parliament Responses

Standard Questions

  1. What have you learned while being in TRTHNBB that you can take to the office of the Speaker of Parliament?
In my duration of being in TRTHNBB, I have learned the process of legislation, and even wrote about it in the 13th issue of the Social Reformer. I have also learned about much of the process of being Speaker, such as going through the Confirmation Committee, Activity Committee/Rules Committee (which I am the chair of), and the full parliament vote. I also have a greater knowledge of regional law than most government members even, which I have learned through intensive study.

  2. What would you say are your guiding principles?
I have 3 guiding principles in regional politics: transparency, activity, and guidance. When I say transparency, I mean I believe the government should be open, and that the parts of government should be as open as possible to the people. When I say activity, I mean that I pledge to be active myself, and wish the same from everyone else in parliament. When I say guidance, I mean assisting people in legislation and guiding them away from decreasing any of the 3 principles I have stated.

  3. There have been many votes in the region. Will you respect the will of the people in NBB?
Of course I will. I can’t stop the will of the people, and never intend to. If they vote in favor of a bill, there’s nothing I could do to stop it. I don’t want to stop the will of the people ever, even if I disagree with it, because while I would represent the people of the region as Speaker, that doesn’t mean I believe I am the people nor have the power of the collective people.

  4. What should the end of your tenure as Speaker look like?
It should look like many more bills passed, with a more constitutionally stable judicial system, more legislators writing bills, and many people too nervous or unwilling to write bills suggesting bills for people in parliament to write.

  5. What do you want to be remembered for?
I want to be remembered for creating the most open and active legislature on NS.

Personal Questions

  1. You state you wish to see parliamentary debates moved onto NS. How exactly would this be done?
So currently ATG has been toying with the idea of setting up a NBB Parliament region, and has even created one already. I believe we could use it as a hub for easier access to parliamentary and law info, as well as being an easier access point to debates for those who can’t join discord.

  2. On point 11 of your plans, you wish to create a suggestion box for those not in parliament to suggest policy, or for those not wishing to write legislation. Surely if one has the drive for change, they will both be an MP and try and attempt to write a Bill - would this make the suggestion box redundant?
There are two things that can stop change even if a resident or citizen has a drive for change. The first thing is the extraneous requirements to join parliament, which I will be lowering after this next voting session (hopefully), keeps new residents who do want to be active from the get-go from making bills they urgently want. In addition, some MPs may be too shy or unconfident to legislate on issues they believe in.

  3. What would an updated code of conduct (herein, 'CoC') look like to you?
An updated CoC would entail the creation of some more necessary rules (which I will be introducing next VS), as well as creating higher rules and lower rules. For the second point, I essentially believe that hate crimes or abuse of power shouldn’t be the same level of punishment as trolling.

  4. Would you prevent motions curtailing the inclusivity of parliament, even in the rare event they have widespread support? If so, how would you justify that?
Prevention of these motions would be by means of supplying alternative measures, instead of brute forcing a bill down. I won’t decline to put a bill up to vote unless it’s unconstitutional, but I will do my best to propose different options for those bills and will provide criticism of them as an MP.

  5. What would a parliament with expanded powers (as mentioned in point 6) look like to you?
Unlike some members of the region, I don’t believe Parliament needs to be overly checked. It represents the literal will of the people. I also think parliament should have more of a say into what ministers do. However, parliament isn’t too checked with the exception of amendment vetoes, and parliament can regulate ministers. What I mean is parliament should take action in order for these strengths to be utilised to increase the power of parliament. I’d also like to extend the power to make parliament able to create more criminal law not related to the CoC.

The Orangutan Nation did not respond to a request for an interview.

Once again, the Election Commission would like to thank Syrasia for their excellent work, and officially endorse this series of interviews.

4: Official Statement from the Election Commission
Authored by New United Common-lands, former EC member, Fact
Foreword by America the Greater

This election has been a contentious one, with candidates widely and frequently broadcasting their campaigns. While this enthusiasm ensures that residents get a chance to see every candidate’s platform, it has also inspired a regrettable amount of controversy within the region. For that reason, the Election Commission released these election guidelines, authored by former EC member New United Common-lands.

Mutual Respect:

Candidates should engage in respectful debate and discussion refraining from personal attacks, disrespectful behaviour or breaking the CoC.

Campaign don’t spam:

Candidates should try to provide campaign updates when they have new campaign media, policy or suggestions.

Equal Opportunity:

The EC will ensure all candidates get an equal opportunity to campaign. The EC will help to communicate campaign dispatches and announcements from all candidates to ensure all residents have access to see campaigning media.

EC Member Impartiality:

The EC individual members will be entitled to their individual opinions and voting rights. However, they must uphold independence and impartiality in their official roles, ensuring fairness during all election proceedings.

5: Messages from the Candidates
Compiled by America the Greater, Opinion

This is a series of messages sent to me by the candidates - it’s a great opportunity to hear directly from the people you may be voting for!

Ardeyn:
Recently, our region's government has in the eyes of many been inactive, unsupportive, and all too eager to ride along the status quo. Though it could be said that our current trajectory is working well enough, we need a government that is able to recognise when change is needed as well as be willing to experiment with reform while enhancing that which has been working for us well so far, all while ensuring that all members are not only aware of such processes but supportive of it as well. Should I be elected, it is this exact government that I promise to deliver and why you should VOTE ARDEYN for PM!

Mjau:
I'm running for PM to change TRTHNBB for the better. Throughout TRTHNBB's history, residents have had complaints that have been ignored, or they haven't felt confident enough to share them. This can be changed by creating an anonymous platform that encourages residents to voice their opinion. Equally importantly, our region needs to be more open to new nations. This means an emphasis on making parliament an outlet for newer nations to gain power, as well as the use of minor offices to trial potentially strong candidates. Thanks for reading, and remember to vote Mjau PM!

Pyhdon:
I will say that my campaign is one of the most benefitting campaigns for young players

The Washington Federation:
We're going for two! Vote TWF!

That's right, I'm running for a second term! If you're satisfied by my term as PM so far, great! If not, then good news, expect reforms in the coming months! Some aspects of the status quo are showing their age, though the general idea of it has been able to persist for so long thanks to great leadership. Through the parliament, open to all citizens with interest, the changes the people want shall be implemented at will by the people!

Join me in my second bid for the premiership, for there is plenty in store for when the summer quarter begins!

Chronic and Violent IBS:
REMEMBER!
Vote CAVIBS for number two!
or don't
don't feel like you have to or anything.
Just vote for the funny.
Rock and Stone!

Gine Caruttiva:
Embark on a journey of prosperity with The Common Way! Together, we'll pave the way for a brighter tomorrow, where solidarity and progress are top priorities. Join our movement, and together, we'll create a future of unity, resilience, and prosperity. We shall build our defense, strengthen our culture and create bonds with other regions. Your support is of the upmost importance for change. Let's make history together! Vote Gine Caruttiva for DPM!

Puttt:
You must vote for me because, im going to make discord does not have to be essential to obtain citizenship, I also think that PR is very good for motivating people, but if the rules are broken, the members of the government should be the most sanctioned.

Western Arba Fir:
VOTE WAF DPM
We need to make the region more welcoming making sure that all of their questions are answered. We need to make sure cabinet is listening to the people's suggestions on what they should do. We need to give Parliament more power than the executive branch because Parliament represents the people best. I PROMISE I WILL NEVER GIVE UP FOR YOU
Vote WAF DPM

The Kaverian:
Hey TRTHNBB! I’m the Kaverian, candidate for Speaker of Parliament for the summer trimester! With 10 bills passed, a consistent dedication to being active, and a focus on political freedom, I hope that you vote for me for Speaker of Parliament. Thank you!

The Orangutan Nation:
In my opinion if i win or i dont i think i will make a good impact. honesty i dont expect to win, if you dont wanna vote me dont.
all im trying to do here is look out for the little guy. My plan is to create a more welcoming and inviting place. there will be more freedom for all of the people trying to join and help out. of course this would create some changes to the laws but thats too complicated for me to write in this short telegram. im not sure if this is best for the nation if i get elected in but i think will make a positive change if you vote me. ty and have a good day!!!

6: Update from the EC
Authored by America the Greater, Fact

We’ve heard fair criticism from TRTHNBB residents that our government isn’t transparent enough. For that reason, I want to release a quick update about what the Election Commission has been up to!

  • We’ve been working with Syrasia, who has developed a thorough set of interviews for each candidate, which you’ve probably already read through if you made it this far!

  • We’ve been organizing debates with each candidate - stay tuned for news on when and where these debates will take place!

  • We’ve created a Campaign Dispatch Hub with links to every candidate’s official campaign platform.

  • We’ve created the Google Form which will serve as the platform for all votes, and the Google Sheet which will display the results of the election.

  • We've written this edition of The Social Reformer!

7: Why You Should Vote
Authored by America the Greater, Opinion

Our election is right around the corner, and we’ve historically had pretty solid turnout, but ‘pretty solid’ just isn’t enough. Here’s why I think you should make sure to vote in this coming election:

  • Your voice matters! This is obvious, but it always bears repeating: every resident of this region deserves to have their opinion considered. Our region exists because of each of you, and TRTHNBB can’t run effectively if we don’t know what each of you wants from the region.

  • Our Instant Runoff Voting system means that you don’t just have to cast one vote for one candidate. This isn’t a first-past-the-post system - we’re asking you to rank each candidate in order of preference. That way, even if your first choice doesn’t win, your vote might ensure that your second choice does. As long as we have enough candidates, you won’t have to worry about the lesser of two evils.

  • We have a ton of candidates! The Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister elections have four candidates each, and those candidates have very different platforms. When you vote in this election, you’re going to be choosing between radically different paths for the region. If you miss out on voting, your own personal ideals might not be considered, and they really deserve to be.

So in conclusion: vote! You’ll have seven days to do it, beginning on May 15. Can’t wait to see you there!

Conclusion

Thank you for reading this month's special Election Edition of The Social Reformer! Hopefully you've gained an in-depth perspective on each candidate, and hopefully you come vote on the 15th!

America the Greater,
Election Commission Member and outgoing Speaker of Parliament
